About the Library
“And so the moment we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold into a library, we've changed their lives forever, and for the better. This is an enormous force for good."
— Barack Obama

Our school library is open to all students and staff from 8.00am to 5.00pm each day for   study, reading and borrowing books.  Everyone can access the facilities before and after school, break and lunch times and during lessons where class teachers have booked the library or PCs to support studies, coursework and research.

Supporting citizenship There are a large number of students who volunteer to work in the library to support other students at breaktime, lunchtime and after school.

“I used to walk to school with my nose buried in a book.”  - Coolio

Reading and Reading Groups
All Year 7, 8 and 9 students regularly visit the library during English lessons. This is when students are able to choose new books, read quietly and take part in activities connected with reading for pleasure.

The library runs various reading groups for all years as well as Staff. The aim of these groups is to explore new books and ideas and to nurture a love of reading.

The junior reading group is involved in the voting process for the Redbridge Children and Teen Book Awards. The students read the nominated books and vote for their favourite titles. The students attend the annual awards ceremony along with reading groups from other schools within Redbridge. A panel of authors including the winners (whenever possible) are usually in attendance to give writing tips, interviews and to sign autographs.

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.”  - Emilie Buchwald

Booked Up Project
Year 7 classes participate in the national Booked-Up project sponsored by the government. The aim is for each Year 7 student to choose a book from a shortlist that they will then be given as a gift for them to enjoy and to encourage reading for pleasure.

Events
We host various events including visits from authors and poets such as Anne Cassidy, Cairan Murtagh, Bali Rai and Breis. The Library also celebrates cultural events such as World Book Day, Black History Month and National Poetry Day with special activities, displays and competitions. We also host various games clubs including scrabble, Draughts and Chess tournaments.

Facilities
In the library we have over 12,000 books. The non-fiction supports both learning within the curriculum and  topics of general interest. Our extensive fiction section includes books recommended and selected by Loxford students as well as other popular, classic and exciting titles that our students enjoy reading. The fiction section ranges from books aimed at students in year 7 all the way up to adult fiction, so whatever their age, ability or taste in books, students will be able to find the right book for them.
The library contains 80 PCs that have access to the Internet for research purposes and are connected to a printer and photocopier which can be used to print students’ work.

“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”  - Confucius
