from Hubei, China. The visit was organised by the SSAT and we were chosen due to our Outstanding Ofsted status.

The group of 21 teachers, plus Eva Wei, who was the translator for the day were from the Hubei Provincial department of Education. They visited Loxford as part of a three week programme for teachers based in schools in rural parts of Hubei province.

They toured the Primary and Secondary buildings, visiting lessons and taking part
in activities. They enjoyed presentations from staff and students on our curriculum, leading schools and the wide range of extended schools activities. The day finished by an interesting question and answer session where we learned of the differences between schools in China and England.

Try the Family Services Directory (FiND)

This Family Services Directory is produced and managed by Families Information Direct
(FiND) - who are part of Children’s Services in the London Borough of Redbridge.

This is a 'one stop' information and advice service for families and people who work
with families.

They specialise in providing information and advice on a wide range of issues that
impact on family life – from childcare and childcare funding; activities for children and young people through to care and support services available for when the going gets tough! We know that children don't come with an instruction manual and that most families need guidance and support at some time as they face the rewards and challenges of bringing up children.

FiND is made up of a small team of highly knowledgeable information/outreach officers
and project workers who are happy to assist with any question you may have – so long as they're related to you and your family's needs. Our philosophy is 'If we can't help you, we'll find someone who can!'

For more information please use the following link –

http://find.redbridge.gov.uk/kb5/redbridge/fsd/home.page

TFL Live Bus Information System

Loxford is proud to have been chosen as one of the 4 sites in London to trial the new TFL live bus arrival information
system.

Students can see this information in the school foyer and on the plasma screens around the building from 3.10 everyday. We can see the 4 local bus stops and the arrival times of buses on the 366 and 145 bus routes. The information is also available in the main school reception throughout the day. Staff, visitors and students can see this on a screen in the reception window.

Over the next few months we will be part of the development of this new system. Our students are working with a research company – 2CV, giving their feedback and ideas for improving the TFL live bus arrival system.

The Year 12 students were very keen to participate and over 40 of the able youngsters applied for the positions. All the applicants were put through a rigorous interview process to check they had the necessary communication skills to coaxh the younger students effectively and those selected were delighted to have been chosen by the Headteacher for this responsible position.
The Year 11 students were really pleased with the additional support and said that it was sometimes easier to ask another student (even an older one) to explain rather than asking the teacher.

Year 12 Poetry By Heart Competition

PoetrybyHeart is a National Competition organised by the Department for education which challenges students in years 10-13 to choose a poem from a list of “classics”, learn it by heart and perform it to an audience.
Every student in Year 12 at Loxford chose a poem and attempted to learn it by heart. The students then performed these in class heats to choose a couple of representatives to go through to the final which was held on March 15th. Some were more successful than others but most students managed to memorise at least a few lines of their chosen poem.
The finalists’ performances were of a very high standard with all the students remembering their poems very well and the best contestants also producing dramatic and emotional performances.
The three winners for the year group were Kemal Cakli, Aaron Peters and Tanya Ahmed. The winners will now compete in the regional contest and hopefully get through to the national final in April.

Visit from author Laura Dockrill.

On Wednesday the 13th March something very exciting, special and colourful happened to Loxford. Laura Dockrill came to visit! The inspirational author came to give year 7 pupils a sneak preview of her brand new children's book 'Darcy Burdock.'

The students heard hysterical and imaginative sections of her text and were then invited to ask the author questions: some silly, some serious. As Laura herself says... 'ask a silly question, get a silly answer; ask a serious question, get a silly answer.' Everyone had fun!

Keep an eye out for Darcy Burdock in a bookshop near you!

The Box Clever Theatre Company

The Box Clever Theatre Company came into Loxford on Tuesday 12th March to perform a production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the whole of Year 10. With only three actors, the company performed a dynamic and contemporary version of this well known play. Year 10 were a brilliant audience and this performance will help them with their GCSE Literature controlled assessment which they will complete in the summer term.
The company also delivered an hour long work shop to the whole of Year 7 on ‘An Introduction to Shakespeare’. Year 7 students were fully engaged and this workshop should have them excited to study Shakespeare in the summer term and beyond.

Physics Department Study Visit to the Large Hadron Collider in CERN

During half term Mr Gillett was part of a study visit to the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, Switzerland. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research and is one of the world’s largest and most respected organisations for scientific research.

Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. CERN is also the place where the World Wide Web and the touch screen computer were invented.

The particle accelerator itself is a 27km circle which is 100m underground. Particles are fired in loops around this circle until they are travelling close to the speed of light, when they are made to smash together in huge collisions. The detectors record the collisions and physicists can use this data to look for new particles.

During the visit we spoke to many physicists working on cutting-edge experiments, including the ATLAS and CMS detectors that are currently publishing work about the discovery of the Higg’s Boson particle. We were also lucky enough to go 100m below the ground to see where the detectors are located and to see the huge computer rooms that process the data recorded.

What to look out for from this trip:

Building Cosmic Ray Detectors: As part of science week this year we will build detectors to spot muons, which are cosmic rays from outer space

Large Hadron Collider talks:

We are looking to arrange an opportunity to talk with scientists working at CERN

Possible trip to CERN: Watch this space!

Rob taught us how to deconstruct a music magazine and analyze it in depth and what features to look for in a music magazine also he taught us about how to deconstruct and an online music magazine.
Furthermore Rob taught us new media terminology which was really interesting. Also we learnt how music magazines are marketed and which company’s oligopoly the music industry.
Another amazing speaker we got to meet was George Gardner who works for Kerrang! As the reviews editor of the world’s biggest selling weekly rock magazine. We had a Q&A session with George about his job and how he became successful. Also, everyone was allowed to ask independent questions relating to music magazines.
However we were meant to have another session with speaker John Doran who is the editor of the music magazine The Quietus. However he could not make it which was really disappointing. Overall it was a great trip and experience with my classmates and I really enjoyed it and I recommend people to go next year.
Leyla, Year 11

BBC Television Centre trip

The trip our school organised to BBC Television Centre was very helpful towards what we currently study and gave us a taste of the real “media” world.

While at the BBC, we got to see many different studios in which the BBC films their programmes and the tour guides showed us a clip about how long it takes to set up one shooting set for a programme. The studio/programme we saw set up was for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and we were all amazed by the amount of time it takes to shoot a programme that is just an hour in length.

As the tour went on, we saw other departments such as BBC News and experienced some of the students from our group appearing on the BBC News Weather screen just like as we see it on television. Moving on, we got a chance to go on the ex-studio for Match of the Day and see how it was set up. We also got to see many really exciting props from various BBC television shows such as Doctor Who and Eastenders. We saw a life size Dalek and the Doctor’s famous Tardis.

Overall, I think the experience gained by going to BBC Television Centre was very helpful and exciting as it gave us a sneak peak into what we can work as in the future and how it would be. The job roles for different workers like directors, producers, editors etc., were all explained to us by the tour guides which made it clear to some students what they are interested in and what work pressure they may face. It was an excellent day out and we all thoroughly loved learning all we did about the BBC.

Saher, Year 13

Sainsbury Vouchers

This was a very special opportunity as we spoke
to Emily from the BBFC about the UK’s film classification system and how they reach their decisions.
We also had the chance to ask questions regarding film regulation.
This was especially beneficial as it is a topic for our A2 media exam this year. We asked questions regarding our exam texts with particular reference to The Dark Knight, The King’s
Speech and Casino Royale. We all found this conference interesting as not only did we manage to interact with someone from the media industry, we were able to use their expertise to gain a more thorough and better understanding of the film texts and how they
are classified. We thoroughly enjoyed this unique opportunity getting to speak to Emily as we learnt many useful aspects about the film industry.

Safa 13S

Romanian teachers visit Loxford

A cohort of Romanian

We were taught about building our ‘UCAS’ by writing a personal statement and handing them in to our designated universities. This session was extremely useful as we gained an idea on how the application process works when applying for your chosen universities and how your personal statement is to your future. We learned that in our personal statement, we have to present our skills and personnel as best as possible and convince the potential universities why we should be offered a place. In the 1 ½ hour session, the visitor explained each step of the university application process and even presented us with examples of personal statements. These statements for Medicine, Maths and Computer Science showed us how significant it is to have a lot of experience for your desired university course. The dedication shown in your statement, the bigger the likelihood that the university will understand your passion and accept you as a part of their community that’s why, the most important thing I learnt is that it’s not impossible to achieve your dream it just takes a lot of hard work and perseverance!

Ernst and Young is one of the world’s leading professional accounting organizations in the world. It has workers in over 140 countries. It supports small start-up businesses to well-established companies by making financial decisions and exploring new opportunities. EY (shorthand for Ernst and Young) has recorded a 22 billion turnover in 2011 and is still rising.

The visit was quite beneficial and very intriguing I would like to explore further as I will consider this as an alternative career route. The representative that visited gave us an insight in to what EY is all about. She also gave us an account of her story - about how she heard about the programme and how she is where she is today. The visitor explained on how to join the programme through various ways which suit every individual.

EY offers programmes for people at different stages in their education. The first one is called the EY school leaver. As soon as you leave sixth form after finishing your two year course EY will take you on straight away. To get a head start into your preferred career, you would jump straight into proceeding gaining technical skills and also professional qualifications. This would be without the stress of university fees which makes the programme so appealing.

Another programme is EY degree which is a university course that combines studies with an eighteen-month paid work placement which ends with professional qualifications and a graduate job offer. This programme gives you an amazing opportunity to study at a world-ranked management school.

The Ernst and Young Organization is an incredible way to step into the business world – doing high profile work on business advisory and financial issues. It is definitely a career path that I will consider pursuing. I would strongly recommend others to research further. It may not be your preferred career choice however it gives you an alternative route and a wider goal for your future.

Our year 2s talked about the right of being able to come to school and being taught and our responsibility was to come to school and work hard to follow our Golden Rules so we can learn.

Delegation of teachers and educationalists from Hubei, China.

On the 21st of November Loxford proudly welcomed our second delegation of teachers and
educationalists from Hubei, China. Teachers visited each others’ schools in India and UK to explore teaching, learning and assessment methods. The exchange visit also provided an insight into cultural diversity. Loxford and Salwan Public School have been engaged on several curriculum projects over the past year. The visit has further informed the development of these projects as well as committed both schools to further new exciting projects.
Highlights of the visit to India included the following:
- learning about each other’s cultural and educational diversities
- teaching Business Studies and Accounting to Salwan students
- tour of the Taj Mahal and Fort Agra with Salwan students
- celebration of Diwali (including dance/musical performances, crafts and lights)
- observation of lessons in Art, Drama, Maths, RE, Geography, ICT, English, Hindi and German.

The visits will enable both schools to:
- embed global themes and skills within curriculum and wider school activities
- develop a benchmark of good practice to disseminate to other schools
- raise levels of achievement
- ensure both schools develop their activities in an equitable and sustainable way for the benefit of pupils, staff, communities and key stakeholders.

Click below to see an overview of short videos of the visit to Salwan Public School (Afternoon).

Science trip to Cambridge University

On 10th October 15 year 11 Physics students visited Cambridge University, to learn about University life and studying Physics at Cambridge. The trip started with a visit to the world famous Cavendish Laboratory, where the students had a workshop about University science studies, and then were able to take part in their own laboratory experiment. In their investigation students used lenses and a light source to work out “the lensmakers formula”. This is the formula that the optician will use to work out what prescription glasses you need!

In the afternoon, students were given a tour around Cambridge city and saw the library and several of the famous colleges. They then visited Newnam College, and saw where students could live when at University. Newnam is a girls-only college with its own library, sports area and dining area. Cambridge University comprises of lots of colleges where students can stay and study, and they choose which college to go to depending on personal preference.
This was a highly enjoyable and informative trip and many of the students feel they would be able to study at Cambridge University and are working hard to be able to apply for a place.

Loxford welcomes guests from Hubei, China.

On the 7th of November Loxford proudly welcomed a delegation of teachers and educationalists from Hubei, China. Go Green!’ campaign to save energy and electricity at Loxford School. Throughout the year we produced a range of posters, stickers, messages and videos to drive the campaign.

To initiate the campaign we designed posters/stickers to remind students and teachers to turn off their monitors, computers/laptops and lights off when they are finished using them. We put these up in every classroom, corridor and staircase!

The second aspect we worked on for the campaign was an eco- video. The main aim of the video was to inform our audience of the environmental and economic importance of saving energy. The video contains comments and interviews from teachers, students and SLT members regarding Loxford’s energy use. The video also contains a short play showing a few students acting out what would happen to polar bears, living in the Arctic, if we do not reduce our energy usage. We also spiced things up by incorporating sound effects and humour to make it entertaining for the whole school to watch!

The third aspect we were worked on for the campaign was putting up stickers in classrooms to remind teachers to turn off their heating when it is hot and to open their windows. Also, we put some stickers up in classrooms to remind teachers how to use the CO2 reading monitor (green, yellow/amber, red light).
The fourth aspect of the campaign will be a “No Energy Day” held towards the end of July. The purpose of this event is to save energy and hopefully encourage teachers to continue practicing energy saving habits. We also plan on holding a Green Cupcake sale to raise money to support an eco – friendly solution.

On Wednesday 30th May the Year 7 Loxford Lions Rugby Team visited Ilford Wanderers Rugby Club for the first ever Redbridge rugby tournament. This was all of the boys first experience playing in a rugby tournament, so excitement was high. It is important to remember that all of the team had never played competitive rugby before joining Loxford School in september and that during the year they had only played one game and lost.

The Lions played five games and the results are shown below:

1. Loxford 6 - 0 Oaks Park A Team
2. Loxford 7 - 0 Oakds Park B Team
3. Loxford 2 - 3 Mayfield
4. Loxford 4 - 2 Wanstead High
5. Loxford 13 - 2 Caterham.

Winning four games out of five was superb and the Ilford Wanderers coach was extremely impressed, so much so that he requested Jacob Cooper, Eri Krasniqi and Timi Atere to join the youth teams. Next year onwards and upwards for the Loxford Lions who will be joining the first ever Redbridge District Rugby League.

Special mention however to all the boys that played: Jacob Cooper, Eri Krasniqi, Timi Atere, Rohan Hanna, Darnell Yiadom, Kieron Mitchell, Mahmood Mansoori, Danyaal Ijaz, Chaku Chongo, Josh Thompson, Humam Mussa, Shereef Adeyemo.

On 24th May one of our reception classes took part in a video conference with Highlands Infants school. We shared some songs that the Highlands' Reception class taught us. The words of the two songs Highlands taught us to sing are:

Oh let’s sing hello together, together, together
Oh let’s sing hello together, I’m so glad you’re here.
For your friends are my friends and my friends are your friends.
Oh let’s sing hello together, I’m so glad you’re here.

and

Hola!
Hola!
Como estas?
Muy bien
Gracias.

Once we had learned the words we then sang the songs with them which was great fun. We then sang some of our favourite songs to the students at Highlands Infants School.

Thank you to the teachers and pupils at Highlands for sharing your songs with us.
