Primary Liaison

During the Summer Term liaison meetings are held with the main feeder primary schools. This allows information about students with SEN to be transferred so that it can be used in IEPs and to inform the Year 7 grouping process.

Year 7 observations

For the first two weeks of the Autumn Tern an LSA is deployed full time with each Year 7 tutor group. Their observations are included in the Year 7 observation booklet.

Year 7 Target Setting for students with statements of SEN

Initial targets for students in Year 7 with Statements are set at their last Annual Review in Year 6. These are revised after the interim review which takes place during the Autumn Term, following discussion with the students and parents.

Salford Reading Test

All new students to the school take the Salford Reading test which provides a reading ages based on decoding skills. The results are used to identify students who would benefit from inclusion on the Toe-by-Toe reading scheme.

In-Class Support

The majority of support lakes place within the classroom. Support is prioritised for students with statements of Special Educational Needs. There is also general support for students on school action plus and school action. Wherever possible the Special Educational Needs teacher or Learning Support Assistant will work with their statemented student as well as those on school action plus and school action.

SEN Literacy Skills Group

Literacy skills groups run for year 7 and 8.
Skills covered in these sessions include:

Ø Reading (stories/plays)
Ø Writing (handwriting, written expression)
Ø Speaking (retelling stories, being able to justify an opinion, telling a story in chronological order)
Ø Listening ( listening, understanding and remembering what someone else says)
Ø Spelling ( 100/200 most common words)
Ø Reference skills ( being able to use a dictionary, an atlas, an index)
Ø Memory
Ø Self-esteem (We KNOW you CAN do well, we need to convince you!)

We will be working in different ways.
Ø Individually: you will be ask to work on an activity on your own
Ø In pairs: we will need to discuss a topic with a friend
Ø In a group: all of you will be asked to contribute to the class discussion. On of you will speak for the group during feedback time.

We will be using different resources:
Ø Worksheets
Ø The library
Ø The ICT suites
Ø The interactive white board soon.

Groups run every term, one lesson a week. Progress is reviewed at the end of each term.

Toe-By-Toe

All children are tested for their reading abilities using the Salford Reading Test as they enter the school in year 7, as are any new entrants to the school. The results of this test allow us to prioritise students who could benefit from individual reading support.

The children receive 1 to 1 tuition for 20 minutes every day following the Toe by Toe reading scheme. When they have completed the book the children are rewarded with a certificate and a box of chocolates for their hard work and achievement.

This scheme builds confidence and self esteem within a classroom setting and on a social level.

Social Skills group

In Years 7, 8 and 9 an intervention will be initiated for students to increase their personal awarenes around the school and environment

Reading Recovery

During P.M. registration students use age appropriate Lexia computer programme to increase Reading, Spelling, and Comprehension.

CAT's Testing

Is an assessment of a range of rasoning skills. The tests looks at reasoning ith three types of symbols: words, numbers, and shapes or figures, i.e verbal, quantitative, and non- verbal reasoning.

Homework club

Homework club takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12.55 and 1.20 pm. Special needs teachers and L S A’s make themselves available to support students with their homework and discuss any other concerns.

Paired Reading

Paired Reading is a scheme that allows readers to practice and improve their reading skills.

Who is involved?

* Y7 to 11 students whose reading age is between 7 and 10, according to the London Reading Test and the Salford sentence Reading Test.

Students are offered the opportunity to take part in the scheme. This is not compulsory.

* 6th formers volunteer and are paired with younger students. They listen, praise, and correct mistakes if and when necessary. The 6th Formers are also encouraged to read aloud to their partner and model ‘good reading’.

What do students read?

* Students are offered a wide range of fiction and non fiction texts. We feel that children should be given a choice, as it is an essential factor to motivate.
* Paired Reading helps students to enjoy and gain confidence when reading.

When does it take place?

* Paired reading takes place 3 times a week, during morning registration, in the 6th Form Study Room for year 7 and in the library for all other tutor groups.
* Paired Reading starts after October half-term and finishes at the end of June.
