The Textiles department consists of two rooms on the ground floor and is staffed by two teachers.
At Key stage three, students are taught and assessed according to the National Curriculum assessment criteria for Design Technology Textiles. Key stage three are on a carousel with Food Technology and Systems and Control and therefore will only complete one year of Textiles within year 7, 8 or 9.
If students wish to take GCSE Textiles or A’ Level Textiles, they must be aware that it is Art and Design; Textile Design and will be expected to draw and design and use a sketchbook creatively.

March 2013
Year 13 students went on a sketching trip to the Hunterian Museum which is part of the Royal College of Surgeons. They sketched gruesome specimens in jars, both human and animal.
It was a trip they will never forget, allowing them to get a closer look at the inside workings of human and animal bodies.
February 2013
Years 12 and 13 have been collaborating with the library team to put on a mini display to celebrate London Fashion Week 2013 which is currently taking place.
December 2012
During December years 12 and 13 went to Tate Britain to visit The Turner Prize exhibition. This helped with current textile A level projects and broadened pupils understanding of art and its many facets.
Uphall primary school visited the textiles department to make heat transfer and embroidered T- Shirts for ‘HEART’ (Helping Educate all Roma Together). This is a joint project between Redbridge and Brasov in Romania. The T- shirts will be sent to Brasov for the pupils to wear during football matches. Well done Uphall the results were brilliant!
Outside the Classroom
This year, pupils have been on trips to The British Museum and The Fashion and Textiles Museum. These visits are directly related to GCSE and A level projects and allow pupils to gain a wider subject knowledge as well as learn from primary research.
Support for your learning
Our aim is to enable students to express themselves through practical tasks and build a strong foundation of a wide range of practical skills across both subject areas.
We want all students to become independent learners, gaining confidence in the use of specialist equipment and terminology and ICT design programmes.
Students are encouraged to work autonomously, in design teams and as a whole class to solve design problems and create solutions. We encourage creative thinking and methodical organisation and planning of the work to be undertaken.
We actively promote the study of these subjects by both boys and girls and embrace the wide cultural make up of the school community, using it as a focus throughout many aspects of our learning experiences.
The practical skills learned and knowledge gained in these two subject areas are true life skills.
