Learning Resource Centre

“And so the moment we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold into a library, we’ve changed their lives forever, and for the better. This is an enormous force for good.”

— Barack Obama

Loxford School Libraries

We have three extensively resourced libraries, staffed by a team of librarians who cater to the needs of the students.

The Sixth Form Library is open until 4.30pm each day for Sixth Form students wishing to study and use its resources. There is a collection of approximately 6000 texts and a bank of 30 PCs for staff and student use.  All students can also access computers during lunchtime.

The main Secondary library is open daily to all students and staff from 8.00am to 4.30pm, for reading and homework. There is a stock of 12000 volumes of both fiction and non-fiction texts that is constantly being developed and updated and a bank of 52 PCs for student and staff use. This library is open at lunchtime for reading and board games.

During the school day both libraries accommodate regular reading sessions during English lessons, booked class visits and individual study.

The Primary library is open throughout the school day and all students visit each week to borrow books, take part in a variety of activities and listen to story-telling sessions.  There is a comprehensive collection of 5000 resources, these include picture books through to fiction and non-fiction that students are encouraged to work with and borrow.

Reading for Pleasure

Primary students are encouraged to explore reading through supported library sessions each week with the primary school librarian. There are supported lessons where students are encouraged to begin their reading journey and to develop a life-long love of reading.

All Year 7, 8 and 9 students regularly visit the library during English lessons. This is when students are able to choose new books, read quietly and take part in activities connected with reading for pleasure.

Students take responsibility for their own reading journey as we encourage use of our own ‘Loxford Express’ reading map. All students are encouraged to explore a variety of genres as they progress through ability zones at their own pace.

Students from both the primary and Secondary phases are involved in the Redbridge Children’s and Teen’s Book Awards. This annual award is led by Redbridge Schools Library in partnership with and supported by librarians and teachers in secondary and primary schools across the borough. The students read the nominated books and vote for their favourite titles. A panel of authors including the winners (whenever possible) are usually in attendance to give writing tips, interviews and to sign autographs. The Award also promotes literacy skills through its annual poetry and short story competitions.

Loxford Express Reading Map

All students in the Secondary Phase use the reading map to support them in their reading choices.

Whole School Reading

The school has a longstanding tradition of promoting whole school reading.

On Thursdays afternoons everyone, staff and students, stops for a 15 minute reading break and drops everything and reads!

Events

All of the libraries host various events including author visits. The Library also celebrates cultural events such as World Book Day, Black History Month and National Poetry Day with special activities and displays.
