Loxford School had the great pleasure of welcoming Mike Haines into school on Tuesday 6th February 2018. Mike Haines, whose life experiences and emotional upheaval brings home to everyone just how precious life and family are to us all. The loss of his brother to terrorism and the realisations that out of such profound tragedy there is hope for a better world, one in which we are valued for whom we are irrespective of our background. “If we hate they win” is perhaps the most powerful and profound message of his presentation.
Mike’s brother, David Haines, was a British aid worker who was killed by ISIS. Since his brother’s death, Mike Haines has travelled the world, spreading a message of unity, tolerance and understanding.Mike’s Campaign ‘Stand Against Hate’ speaks out about the hate which is associated with radical groups. Mike spoke with all students in Years 9 and 10, about his experiences with radicalisation and terrorism. Mike shared experiences with students at the end of the sessions of which many wanted to ask questions. Both staff and students were moved by Mike’s story and students will be following up the talk through PSCHE sessions.
