Physical education develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. A high-quality physical education curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity.

Within the units covered, the emphasis is to develop positive attitudes to physical activity, and students are expected to participate fully in all physical education lessons (100% participation policy). Students will work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. The key concepts and processes focused on at Loxford include;

  • Developing physical and mental capacity to succeed.
  • Developing skills/performance.
  • Making and applying decisions.
  • Making informed choices about healthy and active lifestyles.
  • Evaluating and improving performance.

Alongside the physical education curriculum, there are a wide range of extra-curricular clubs available to students at lunchtime and after school.  The physical education department run inter-form competitions, as well as playing fixtures and competitions against other schools.

During Years 7, 8 and 9 all students will have two one hour lessons of physical education each week. The aims at key stage 3 are for students to develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully.  When they are performing, they will analyse the situations presented to them and apply into practical decisions. They will reflect on their own and others’ performances, finding appropriate ways to improve them.  As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy and active lifestyles. Students will discover what they like to do and what sports they perform strongly in. They will actively seek to get involved in physical activity inside and outside of school, as this will help them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

A wide variety of activities are offered at Loxford these include; athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, handball, health related fitness, netball, rounders, rugby [tag and contact] ,tennis and swimming.

Paper 1: The human body and movement in physical activity and sport

Students will be assessed on the following points:

Students will be assessed on the following points:

  • Sports psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences

Controlled Assessment:     

Non-exam assessment: Practical performance in physical activity and sport – 30%

Students will be assessed on the following points:

  • Practical performance in three different physical activities in the role of player/performer (one in a team activity, one in an individual activity and a third in either a team or in an individual activity).

For each of their three activities, students will be assessed in skills in progressive drills (10 marks per activity) and in the full context (15 marks per activity).

  • Analysis and evaluation of performance to bring about improvement in one activity – 10%

Performance analysis assessment is worth 25 marks and equates to 10% of the overall qualification. Students will be assessed on their analysis (15 marks) and evaluation (10 marks) of performance to bring about improvement in one activity. Students can analyse and evaluate their own performance or the performance of another person. This can be carried out in either verbal or written format.

Career Value  

PE is a subject accepted by employers as a GCSE. It is useful for students who are considering a career that includes any aspect of sport.  For example:

  • Health and fitness
  • Club and Duty Management;
  • Sales and Marketing;
  • Instructing and Coaching;
  • Consultancy work based on GP referrals - usually with particular sections of the population, e.g. those with diabetes, arthritis;
  • Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Naturopathy and Chiropractic;
  • Lifestyle Consultancy and Nutrition - opportunities are increasing as the sector embraces the concept of wellness.
  • Sport and recreation
  • Sport Development, Performance, Administration and Facility Management;

  • General Management in venues including theme parks, cinemas and tourist attractions;

  • Sport Media, including writing, PR and marketing;

Congratulations to those students who completed their GCSE course in 2020 with 78% of students scoring a grade 9 to 4.

Physical Education has a unique contribution to make to the overall development of the students in terms of personal, social and physical attributes. Students should experience a Physical Education Curriculum which continually stresses the true value of sporting involvement and physical activity:
