At the Loxford School we aim to deliver PSCHE through tutor times. The aim is to ensure that the PSCHE programme helps students to lead confident and healthy lives both as individuals and as members of the wider community while developing their spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness.
PSCHE gives students the opportunities to reflect on their experiences and how they are developing. It helps them to understand and responsibly manage a wide range of relationships as they get older and to show respect for diversity and differences between people.
Through work in lesson time and a wide range of activities beyond the curriculum including outside speakers, students gain practical knowledge and skills to help them live healthy lives and to deal with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face as they approach adulthood. Sex and relationship education is taught to all students at key stages throughout the year. Students are also aware of current issues in the news and PSCHE in the school adapts to ensure all topics are relevant and up to date for each year group. As a result, PSCHE seeks to help students to:
- Develop confidence, independence, responsibility and a socially moral identity
- Make the most of their abilities, in school and in the outside world
- Develop healthy, safe lifestyles and friendships
- Develop good relationships and to respect the differences between people
- Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them to become effective and active members of their community
Following the COVID-19 Pandemic PSCHE has focused on a whole school recovery curriculum. This has allowed student to adjust to life back in school and has also supported student’s health and emotional wellbeing.
Exemplar units that are followed in various year group are:
- Year 7 – Bullying, Healthy Lifestyles, Community, Values, FGM, SRE and Drugs Education, awareness of Social Media, Radicalisation, Careers, Body Changes and Puberty.
- Year 8 – Safety, Relationships, Global Politics, Crime, awareness of Social Media, Online safety, Stereotyping, SRE and Drugs Education, FGM, Prevent, Puberty & Relationships including Peer on Peer relationships.
- Year 9 – Safety, Options, SRE and Drugs Education, Consent, the law, are you ready for relationships, awareness of Social Media, Careers education, Contraception and Sexually transmitted infections, mental health, radicalisation, county lines, awareness of Peer on Peer relationships and abuse.
- Year 10 – Safety, County lines, Rights and Responsibilities, SRE and Drugs Education, Consent, the law, FGM, Forced Marriage, awareness of Social Media, consent, Contraception and Sexually transmitted infections, mental health and wellbeing, Human rights and Careers education.
- Year 11 – Revision skills, Interview techniques, Careers education for post 16, Stress Management, awareness of Social Media, Forced Marriage, SRE, Consent and Drugs Education, Peer on Peer abuse and relationship awareness, Mental health and coping strategies, Radicalisation and Human rights.
- Year 12 – Relationships – safe and unsafe relationships, SRE and Drugs Education, Body image, Health and wellbeing including mental health and coping techniques, SRE, Consent & the law, Gender & Sexuality, Drugs & Alcohol, Weapons, Stop & Search, First Aid, Road Safety, awareness of Social Media, Radicalisation, Financial Systems, Tax, Democracy & Political systems, Human Rights, Legal Systems and Careers.
- Year 13 – Relationships including peer on peer abuse in relationships, Managing relationships safely, Health and wellbeing including mental health and coping techniques, SRE and Drugs Education, Body image, SRE, Consent & the law, Gender & Sexuality, Drugs & Alcohol, Weapons, Stop & Search, radicalisation, First Aid, Road and Driving Safety, Financial Systems, Tax, Stocks & Currency, Democracy & Political systems, Human Rights, Legal Systems, student finance and budgeting.
In Key Stages 3 and 4, these topics are covered in 15 minute sessions at the end of the day.
At Key Stage 5, these topics are covered in 15 minute sessions at the end of the day. Students in Year 13 also have a 1 hour session each week.
This is all done in the knowledge that Loxford School produces happy, healthy students with an insight into the world they live in.

PSCHE and British Values
The notion of British Values is also incorporated within and embedded within the curriculum. The five part definition of British Values is:
- The rule of Law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
With these values in mind, we aim for students to leave Loxford as well rounded individuals, promoting the very strong British values of respecting other students of different faiths and races. They are equipped to deal with life in modern Britain. This helps them to understand and responsibly manage a wide range of relationships as they get older and to show respect for diversity. This is especially important at Loxford where there are approximately 50 languages spoken as a mother tongue.
The concept of democracy is woven into the programme with elections being held for the Student Councils, Cabinet and the School Parliament with the students respecting the final decisions that are made. The most recent General Election and Brexit vote allowed the students to debate, argue and defend their positions with the realisation that the majority vote wins. The school council elects students through a democratic election in each tutor group. Students also take part in the Redbridge youth election process where they are all given the opportunity to vote on key issues affecting young people.
In addition to the curriculum lessons we also have a busy schedule of assemblies, workshops, trips and activities that take place to enhance our student’s personal development whilst they are at The Loxford School. Some examples of recent events include; Knife crime speakers and police talks, police workshops on social media, knife crime, CPR training, road safety, FGM, mental health and radicalisation workshops, lessons on fake news, propaganda, child sexual exploitation and sex and relationships.â
PSCHE – Topic Summary
The specific units that are followed in each year group are:
- Year 7 – Settling in, getting to know the tutor group/school, managing time, dangers of smoking/alcohol, British Institutions – Parliament and its history, the BBC and the NHS.
- Year 8 – Safety, Relationships, Healthy Eating, Benefits of exercise, awareness of drugs, British Institutions – Parliament and its history, the electoral system and advantages/disadvantages of First Past The Post.
- Year 9 – Different types of learning, how students themselves learn, skills related to jobs, internet safety, Options, The EU, its impact upon Britain and Britain’s role within it, Prejudice/discrimination and Female Genital Mutilation.
- Year 10 – Looking forward to GCSE’s, different types of learning, revision skills, the law related to smoking, UN – its impact upon Britain and Britain’s role within it, The Glorious Revolution (Bill of Rights), the Magna Carta, concept of National Insurance and the Birth of Trade Unions. We also look at Forced Marriages and Child Sexual Exploitation.
- Year 11 – Time management, revision skills, CV’s, Female Genital Mutilation, SRE, STI’s and Mental Health Issues.
- Year 12 – Mental Health, Parliament and its history, the electoral system and advantages/disadvantages of First Past The Post, EU, FGM, SRE, STI’s and Forced Marriages, Thinking Skills, Looking at Universities, Relationships, SRE and Drugs Education.
- Year 13 1 hour lesson overview – Thinking Skills, Global Issues, Relationships, SRE and Drugs Education
In Year 7 and 8 these topics are covered in 15 minute sessions at the end of the day, Year 9 complete their sessions in the 15 minute session they have in the morning.
At Key Stage 5, these topics are covered in 30 lessons once a week during the school day.
