A Trip To ‘Imperial College London’

November 4th 2026

All of Year 12 Mathematics students from Loxford school visited Imperial College London to attend research-level lectures on Applied Partial Differential Equations in October.

Although the material went well beyond the A-level syllabus, the students engaged thoughtfully with ideas about how PDEs model real-world phenomena such as fluid flow, heat transfer and wave propagation. They also took part in a lively discussion on differential geometry, exploring how concepts like curvature and surfaces connect to the equations they had been studying.

Between sessions, the students had the chance to talk with current Imperial students about university life, course choices and what studying mathematics at degree level is really like. The day ended with a guided tour of the campus, giving the group a feel for the facilities and atmosphere of one of the UK’s leading universities. For many, the trip was an inspiring glimpse of where mathematics can lead.
